Free support for rural and small business to navigate flood recovery options
Rural Financial Counselling Service North Queensland (RFCSNQ) is encouraging primary producers and small businesses impacted by recent severe weather events across North and North West Queensland to connect to its free, impartial service.
RFCSNQ is a not-for-profit organisation that has been supporting rural and small businesses, including sole traders, across North Queensland for more than two decades.
The service provides free, confidential and independent financial counselling, helping businesses understand their position, work through recovery options and make informed decisions at their own pace.
RFCSNQ Chair Rick Britton, who is also Mayor of Boulia Shire and a beef producer, said the impacts of flooding can vary widely across the region, and it’s often the uncertainty that weighs heaviest in the early days.
“After an event like this, a lot of people are left wondering what comes next,” Cr Britton said. “While announcements of support and funding are most welcome, it can be hard to know where to start, what help is available, or even what questions you should be asking. That’s where we come in.”
Cr Britton said the RFCSNQ team understand the realities of running a business in the north and the pressure that comes with weather events.
“We live and work in these communities. We’ve been through floods, droughts and disasters before alongside the people we support, and we’re ready to do it again - when businesses are ready to pick up the phone or send us an email,” he said.
“We keep it straight forward working with clients by phone, email, virtually or we can travel to meet where possible.
“There’s no obligation and no cost. The service is funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments and we work with our colleagues in other support services and government agencies including QRIDA.”
“We’ll sit down with you, help you take stock, and work through your options, whether that’s disaster assistance, cashflow planning, debt management or just helping you get your head around the next few months.”
Cr Britton also encouraged business owners to look after themselves as well as their operations.
“At times like this it’s also important to check in on each other – and yourself,” he said. “If you’re feeling stretched or worried, you’re not alone. We have dedicated wellbeing coaches ready to work with you to focus on your mental health and decision-making, so you’ve got a clear plan to move forward. That helps you, your family and your business.”
